Mentoring is a developmental relationship in which a more experienced person helps a less experienced person. The person receiving the help may be referred to as a protégé, apprentice, or mentoree. We usually refer to them as a "mentee".

"Mentoring is a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital, and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development; mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a person who is percieved to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protege)" (Bozeman, Feeney, 2007).

A private tutor teaches a specific educational subject or skill to an individual student or small group. This individualized attention allows the student to improve knowledge or skills far more rapidly than in a classroom setting. Often tutors help remedial students or others needing special attention; however many provide more advanced material for exceptionally capable and highly motivated students.

Tutelage is the process of being under the guidance of a tutor.

Peer tutoring - tutoring students with similar age or grade level.

The difference between tutoring and mentoring is one of both depth and scope. A tutor may help you with a particular subject while a mentor may assist you in career paths, life advice and coaching. I often explain it this way: "A tutor may be well-versed in a subject but you may not want to hang out with them or emulate them in any way beyond doing well in that subject. A mentor is someone that you actively seek out that you would want to emulate. A mentor is someone who has been where you want to be."
